Combine Group on “La Sicilia”
Evading or minimizing animal testing, expediting drug approval processes, and navigating research pitfalls are the focal points of a team of researchers from the University of Catania, utilizing Uiss, the virtual patient. Uiss, an acronym for Universal Immune System Simulator, represents the culmination of fifteen years of work by Catania’s scientists and fits seamlessly into the realm of computational medicine.
As the name suggests, Uiss is software designed to replicate the immune system’s response to a pathogen and the presence of a drug, both for an individual and groups of individuals, each with distinct immune characteristics. Having undergone successful trials for various conditions, the software is now being employed, not surprisingly, in the context of Covid research.
